Headphone Stand
Learn fundamental woodworking tools and techniques while making a functional and beautiful headphone desk stand from scratch!
Offered: Every 3 months
Duration: 4 hours
Registration: $90 (including supplies) or $60 (bring your own wood)
Slides: N/A
Description: In this four-hour hands-on workshop, we’ll use woodworking tools and techniques to take hardwood boards through to finished headphone stands. During registration, you’ll determine whether you want to bring your own wood or have it supplied for you - in which case we’ll handle getting the materials, so you just need to show up on the day of the workshop. You'll also decide whether you want to make a one-headphone or two-headphone stand - examples of each are in the photos below - so we can supply the correct materials.
During the workshop, we’ll talk through the process, explain some fundamentals, and walk through a safety briefing. Once the basics are out of the way, each workshop attendee will work on cutting, shaping, and assembling their headphone stand, guided by our staff. Finally, we’ll walk through some basic finishing techniques you can use to protect your new headphone stand for years to come!
Along the way, we’ll learn how to use some of the most common woodworking power tools - band saws, miter saws, drill presses, routers, and sanders - as well as hand tools such as chisels and files. We’ll also discuss how to create your own custom router templates - a fantastic skill if you want to create a set of matching items or start producing goods to sell.
Attendees will leave this workshop with an understanding of how to safely use a range of common woodworking power hand hand tools, knowledge of common topics in woodworking such as grain direction and finishing, and a beautiful headphone stand to show off or give as a gift!
The photos below illustrate a two-headphone stand in flame maple and a one-headphone stand in mahogany, as well as some of the tools, supplies, and templates used in the workshop.
FAQ
What ages is this class suitable for?
This class is suitable for participants ages 16+.
Do I need to sign a liability waiver?
All visitors coming to Open Workshops for the first time must sign a liability waiver prior to entering the shop. Attendees under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
Do I need to bring any tools or supplies?
If you select the registration with supplies, no! We'll have a selection of interesting wood to choose from. If you choose the "bring your own wood" registration, it will be your responsibility to purchase and bring wood of the appropriate size. You can also bring your own PPE if you'd like.
I want to bring my own wood - what do you recommend?
Any wood with an interesting grain and good workability. Curly, flame, or birds-eye maple have interesting shimmering ripples, as does leopardwood; zebrawood, purpleheart, and padauk have interesting colors. In the end, though, bring whatever you think looks good!
I want to bring my own wood - where should I get it?
I would recommend starting with Woodcraft. They have a physical store in Sterling Heights where you can see and purchase a huge variety of exotic woods in person; they also have a sale bin if you're the thrifty type, and an online store if you don't have time to visit in person.
I want to bring my own wood - what size do I need?
A one-headphone stand requires stock that is roughly 3/4" D x 4" W x 15" L. A two-headphone stand requires stock that is roughly 3/4" D x 5" W x 20" long.
