3D Printing Services
In support of makers in our community, we're happy to offer 3D printing services for both members and non-members! We have a number of 3D printers with a variety of capabilities, and lots of expertise in using them. If you want to learn how to use a 3D printer yourself, come visit our makerspace during open shop hours or take our class on learning to 3D print!
Print Request Process
Please read the FAQ and FYI below before submitting a file to be printed to ensure you're aware of all restrictions and limitations.
Fill out this form to submit your print request.
An Open Workshops staff member will process your request to determine if the print is feasible, if the requested filament and color is available, and price (based on grams of filament used). See below for pricing details.
A staff member will email you to confirm the pricing and options for your print, or if your request cannot be completed as filed (e.g. the requested color is not available or the print is too large for our printers).
Once email confirmation is received from you, your print will be scheduled to run during the next available time slot. Please be aware that member prints and projects receive priority, so it may be up to a week before your print can be scheduled.
You will receive an email when your print is complete; you can stop by to pick it up during the open shop hours specified on our calendar. Please be prepared to pay for your print at time of pickup; we accept cash, credit cards, and contactless/wallet payments.
3D Print Pricing
3D print costs are based on the type of filament used. Members get 100g of free filament a month, and can print with their own filament for free!
Prints under 20 grams will be rounded up to the price for 20 grams.
If you wish to bring your own filament (BYOF), please indicate as such on your print request. You are welcome to label and store your filament in our 3D printing lab.
FAQ and FYI
Can I bring my own filament?
Yes - in fact, if there's a specific filament type or color you want, we recommend it! Please identify that you plan to bring filament on your print request. You are welcome to label and store your filament in our 3D printing lab. Be aware that not all filament types can be accommodated on our printers - please check with us before purchasing something expensive and exotic.
How soon will my print be done?
Since we're a makerspace first and foremost and not a print-on-demand services company, we prioritize member prints and projects first. As such, we can't tell you when your print will be completed. If you want to ensure your print is completed more quickly, please sign up for a membership - and if you learn to use the printer yourself, it'll be even quicker!
Will you remove supports or clean up the print for me?
No, we will not do any post-processing - your print will likely be handed to you with support material still attached. The best way to ensure we don't accidentally remove part of the print with the support is to let you remove it!
I'm not close by or available during your open shop hours; will you mail my finished print?
Unfortunately we can't mail any completed 3D prints; please make sure you'll be able to pick it up before you submit your request. If you're only available during certain times, we may be able to have a staff member meet you at the makerspace to hand over your print, but we can't guarantee it. Please be aware that 3D prints that aren't picked up within two weeks of completion may be disposed of.
What if I want specific slicer/support/strength settings?
Please note any specific slicer or support settings in the appropriate section in your print request; we'll do our best to accommodate. Please be aware that we are not responsible for any issues that may occur as a result of using nonstandard slicer settings.
My print was warped, too small, too big, or too weak - will you reprint it?
Unfortunately, we can't offer free reprints for any issues that arise from the model. Tolerances and strength are common issues with 3D printed parts, even with the best printers and materials. We'll apply the best print settings we can determine for your model and use case, but if the part is defective for reasons outside our control, you'll need to submit another print request. If you'd like advice on a model you're designing or printing, please visit the shop, and we'll be happy to lend our expertise to help your print succeed!
This 3D printing thing is super cool - where can I learn more?
We think so too! You're welcome to stop by the makerspace during open shop hours for a brief explanation of the technology, but for a full rundown, we'd recommend our Learn to 3D Print class (which also includes a free 3D print up to 50g!)
