Learn to 3D Print

Take a dive into the world of 3D printing as we explain the technology, terminology, benefits, and drawbacks, including live demonstrations!

Offered: Every month

Duration: 2 hours

Registration: $30

Slides: Available on Google Drive

Description: In this two-hour class, we'll explain the terminology of 3D printing, how it works, and discuss the benefits and drawbacks, including plenty of live demonstrations and examples. If you walk in knowing nothing about 3D printing beyond the name, you should walk out with enough information to start your own 3D printing journey, either with Open Workshops or on your own!

Class registration also includes a hands-on walkthrough and free 3D print up to 50g of filament any time during open shop hours in the two weeks after the class (printer availability permitting).

Both in-person and hybrid registration is available for this class. Check out the FAQ for details!

FAQ

What ages is this class suitable for?

This class is suitable for all ages, but is less hands-on and more informational than some of our workshops. As such, it might not keep the attention of younger audiences. Attendees under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Do I need to sign a liability waiver?

All visitors coming to Open Workshops for the first time must sign a liability waiver prior to entering the shop. Attendees under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

What if I'm new to the subject?

Not a problem! This class assumes no prior knowledge of 3D printing - it starts at the basics and works up from there.

What if I can't afford the registration fee?

Accessibility is one of the guiding principles of Open Workshops, and we know our registration fees won't be affordable to everyone. This class has reduced-priced need-based tickets available; if you are interested in that program, please email us at info@open-workshops.com.

How can I redeem my free 3D print?

Just stop by the makerspace any time during our open hours! We'll walk you through the process of downloading and slicing a file and sending it to a printer. Depending on the size of the model, the print may take several hours, so you may need to come back to pick it up later if you can't wait.

How does the hybrid registration work?

Attendees who register for hybrid tickets will receive a link via email to an online Google Meet video call where they can dial in to the class to participate. You can then come to the shop at a time that suits your schedule to redeem your free 3D print and get some hands-on experience!
