Description: In this four hour workshop split between two weeks, participants will learn about and practice destructive sculpting methods in foam. Foam sculpting is a forgiving medium, allowing the use of various tools to achieve different results. The class will cover tool usage, tips and tricks, and an overview of safety hazards related to the materials and tools, and will result in participants completing their own foam sculpture to take home!
In this, the first two-hour session, participants will receive a blank foam block and spend some time brainstorming and sketching their ideas directly onto the block. The instructor will provide a brief overview of contemporary sculpting types and offers inspiration for ideas and techniques. A key focus will be on 'projection,' which involves visualizing the final sculpture from a side profile view, helping participants move from 2D to 3D space. This sketching phase helps in visualizing the final piece before any material is removed, as adding material back is not possible in this sculpting method. After a safety and tool usage briefing, attendees will begin sculpting! The remaining time will be dedicated to allowing participants to work towards their creative vision with guidance and support from the instructor.
In this, the second two-hour session, participants will refine their sculpture started during Day 1 using progressively finer tools and techniques. The instructor will discuss options for finishing sculptures using paint, sealer, glue, or other options to provide a more durable surface and uniform appearance if desired. Finally, we’ll end the class with group and individual photos highlighting your work!
Participants who wish to work on their sculptures outside of the workshop can visit during our open shop hours and purchase a day pass for $10 or monthly membership for $25. For more information, please see our membership page.
